Gallstones

General Surgery Diseases

Common Surgical Conditions

Gallstones

Gallstones are deposits of digestive fluid that form in the gallbladder. Long-term accumulation may lead to complications such as inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis) and sepsis.

Varicose veins

A chronic condition caused by venous valvular insufficiency in the lower limbs, leading to blood reflux and pooling, which causes blood vessels to dilate and twist. It is commonly seen in individuals who stand or sit for prolonged periods.

Breast disease

Covers a wide range of benign (such as hyperplasia, fibroadenoma, mastitis) and malignant (breast cancer) conditions. Common symptoms include lumps, pain, abnormal discharge, or skin changes.

Hernia

A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body pushes through a gap in the abdominal wall, forming a swelling or lump in the abdomen or groin.

Appendicitis

The appendix becomes inflamed due to blockage or infection, most commonly occurring between the ages of 10 and 30. Typical symptoms include a dull pain around the navel that shifts to right lower quadrant (RLQ) pain, accompanied by fever, nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, and rebound tenderness. Acute appendicitis requires emergency medical attention, as delays may lead to perforation, peritonitis, and sepsis.

Minor tumours

Such as sebaceous cysts, lipomas, fibromas, moles, and warts. These benign tumors are typically small, slow-growing, well-defined, and elastic. If they are small or superficial, they can usually be removed through a simple surgical excision under local anesthesia.

Piles (haemorrhoids)

Due to obstruction of blood circulation around the anus or weakening of the surrounding tissues, it causes swelling of blood vessels and protrusion of vascular tissues, resulting in haemorrhoids.

Cholecystitis

The primary cause is bile stasis, edema, and infection resulting from gallbladder obstruction by gallstones, most of which present as acute episodes. Symptoms include persistent severe right upper quadrant (RUQ) pain (which may radiate to the right shoulder or back), fever, nausea, and vomiting.

Endocrine Diseases

Thyroid nodules

A mass of abnormal tissue in the thyroid gland can be benign or malignant. Excessive benign nodules can cause a problem with appearance, and trouble swallowing or breathing.

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid)

A common endocrine disorder caused by insufficient secretion of thyroid hormones, leading to a slowed overall metabolism. Typical symptoms include fatigue, cold intolerance, weight gain, dry skin, constipation, impaired memory, and a slowed heart rate.

Hyperparathyroidism & Hypoparathyroidism

Excessive secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) leads to the release of calcium from bones, increased intestinal calcium absorption, and renal calcium retention, resulting in hypercalcemia.

Thyroid cancer

Thyroid cells begin to grow out of control and build up to form a cancerous tumour.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour

A rare malignant tumor originating from the endocrine cells of the pancreas, which typically grows slowly. It is categorized into functional (such as insulinoma causing hypoglycemia) and non-functional (asymptomatic, often diagnosed at an advanced stage).

Thyroglossal cyst

A common congenital neck mass resulting from the failure of the thyroglossal duct to close during embryonic thyroid descent. The typical symptom is a painless, round mass located along the midline of the anterior neck near the hyoid bone, which moves upward during swallowing or tongue protrusion.

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)

Hyperthyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland produces too much of the hormone thyroxine. It can accelerate your metabolism, causing symptoms such as increased appetite but weight loss, fear of heat, insomnia, rapid heartbeat and hand tremors.

Adrenal tumour

Benign or malignant tumors growing in the adrenal glands, the majority of which are non-functional benign adenomas (“adrenal incidentalomas”). If functional, they secrete excessive hormones leading to hypertension, Cushing’s syndrome (buffalo hump, moon face), or hypokalemia (low potassium).

Swollen lymph nodes

Usually a normal response of the body’s immune system to fight infection (such as a cold or inflammation); most will subside on their own once the infection heals. Common causes include viral/bacterial infections, autoimmune diseases, or malignancies.

FAQ - General Surgery

Whether thyroid hormone supplementation is required after surgery depends on how much of the thyroid gland was removed. If an extensive portion is removed, leading to hypothyroidism, thyroid hormone replacement therapy will be necessary. If you have further questions, please consult a General Surgery specialist.

Most thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and are usually detected only after a physical examination. If the nodule is benign and not large in size, regular check-ups are all that is required. If there are changes in the nodule, swelling and pain in the neck, or if they have caused problems such as difficulty in swallowing or breathing, seek early medical attention for appropriate treatment.

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) is a modern surgical technique that utilizes several small incisions and advanced imaging technology to perform surgical procedures, reducing the trauma associated with the large incisions used in traditional open surgery. This results in more aesthetic scarring and a faster recovery process.

Specialist consultation at Specialists Central does not require a referral from a general practitioner. You can call our clinic directly and make an appointment for a surgical consultation.
