Digestive tract diseases
Colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Hong Kong. It develops from abnormal growths called polyps that form in the lining of the colon. These polyps have the potential to evolve into colorectal cancer.
Dyspepsia
Commonly occurring in the upper abdomen, manifesting as abdominal bloating, pain, discomfort, early satiety, loss of appetite, vomiting, or belching.
Constipation
Commonly occurring in the upper abdomen, manifesting as abdominal bloating, pain, discomfort, early satiety, loss of appetite, vomiting, or belching.
Irritable Bowel
Syndrome (IBS)
A chronic condition affecting the colon (large intestine), caused by dysfunction in the gut. Main symptoms include discomfort and pain, along with alternating diarrhea and constipation.
Esophageal Cancer
Malignant tumors occurring in the esophageal epithelial cells, primarily caused by smoking, alcohol consumption, hot beverages, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
Stomach Ulcers
Erosion or damage to the gastric mucosal lining, primarily caused by excessive gastric acid secretion or a reduction in mucosal protection. Common causes include Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and lifestyle stress.
Celiac Disease
A chronic autoimmune disease triggered by the ingestion of gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye) in genetically predisposed individuals.
Piles (haemorrhoids)
A condition where small blood vessels and connective tissue in the anus protrude, usually causing symptoms only when they become enlarged or inflamed. Prolonged sitting and chronic constipation are the main causes of hemorrhoids.
Acid Reflux
Common symptoms include chest burning (heartburn), acid reflux, a foreign body sensation in the throat, or a chronic cough.
Difficulty Swallowing
Refers to functional, structural, or psychological impairments during the process of transporting food from the mouth to the stomach. Common symptoms include choking while eating, coughing, excessive phlegm, a sensation of food being stuck in the throat, or weight loss.
Crohn's Disease
A chronic, relapsing autoimmune inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes chronic ulceration and “skip lesions” (patchy inflammation) in any part of the digestive tract, from the mouth to the anus.
Digestive gland disease
Liver Cancer
A malignant tumor that arises from abnormal changes in liver cells, and it is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Hong Kong. It is generally believed that cirrhosis, hepatitis, and excessive alcohol consumption are high-risk factors for developing liver cancer.
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is an inflammatory condition of the pancreas, categorized into acute and chronic types. Acute pancreatitis typically manifests as a sudden onset of severe upper abdominal pain (which may radiate to the back), nausea, and vomiting, often caused by gallstones or excessive alcohol consumption; it requires immediate medical intervention. Chronic pancreatitis involves long-term recurrent inflammation, which can lead to digestive dysfunction, steatorrhea (fatty stools), and diabetes.
Liver Cirrhosis
A condition where the liver is damaged over a long period, leading to liver fibrosis and ultimately resulting in the liver’s inability to function properly.
Hepatitis
Common causes include viral infections (Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E), alcohol abuse, medications, or fatty liver, all of which can impair liver function. Acute hepatitis presents with low-grade fever, fatigue, and jaundice; chronic hepatitis (such as Hepatitis B and C) can easily lead to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer.
Gallstones
Crystalline deposits formed from bile components that accumulate in the gallbladder or bile ducts. If they block the bile duct and hinder bile flow, they can cause severe pain.
Pancreatic Cancer
A highly invasive malignant tumor that, due to its concealed location, presents with subtle early symptoms such as upper abdominal pain and weight loss. Most cases are diagnosed at an intermediate or late stage, resulting in a high mortality rate.

Common Questions about Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Helicobacter pylori is a common bacterium that resides in the stomach, and most carriers show no symptoms. However, long-term infection can lead to dyspepsia, gastritis, and in severe cases, stomach cancer. Eradicating Helicobacter pylori early can prevent early lesions and reduce the risk of stomach cancer.
Endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy) is an invasive procedure, but the risks are generally low. Pregnant women and patients with diabetes, heart disease, or hypertension should inform their doctors beforehand to assess their health conditions. If you have any questions after the endoscopy, please contact the clinic promptly.
Liver cirrhosis results from long-term liver damage and inflammation, leading to structural changes that impair normal function. There is a significant relationship between liver cirrhosis and liver cancer, as they often occur sequentially. Early detection and targeted treatment for patients with liver cirrhosis may delay progression to liver cancer.
