Plastic Surgery

Plastic Surgery

Plastic surgery is a surgical speciality involving the restoration, reconstruction, or refinement of physical defects of form or function due to injuries in accidents or diseases, or congenital defects. Reconstructive surgery and cosmetic/aesthetic surgery are essential components of plastic surgery. The treatment scope of the speciality covers the body, limbs, facial features (eyes, ears, mouth and nose) and skin.

When assessing treatment options, plastic surgeons will consider the patient’s physical condition and utilize both reconstructive and aesthetic principles to optimize the appearance, functional outcome and the quality of life of their patients.

Specialists Central operates across two clinics in Central and Mong Kok. With in-house facilities that meet international standards and led by experienced plastic surgeons and practitioners, we are here to offer one-stop healthcare from consultation, risk assessment, examination, diagnosis to surgery and treatment services for patients requiring plastic surgeries.

Diseases & Conditions

Head & Neck Surgery

Thyroid diseases

Thyroid diseases include goitre, hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer and parathyroid adenoma, etc.

Salivary gland tumour

Most are benign, with painless lumps occurring in the parotid gland being the most common presentation.

Head and neck tumour

Commonly seen in inflammatory infections, congenital cysts, or tumors.

Tongue cancer, mouth cancer

After removal of a head and neck tumour, there is a risk of facial tissue loss, or occlusal or speech dysfunction requiring reconstructive surgery.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma

A malignant tumor formed by the abnormal proliferation of nasopharyngeal cells. It has a higher incidence rate in males (approximately 3:1) and is most commonly seen in individuals aged 40 to 60.

Head & Neck Tissue Defects

Most are congenital structural deformities, which are repaired by skin graft to restore the function and maintain the cosmetic outcomes.

Traumatic defects of facial tissues

Defects in soft tissue and bone caused by accidents, burns, or tumor resection, which severely impact appearance and function.

Skin & Subcutaneous Tissue Lesions

Sebaceous cyst, lipoma, epidermoid cyst

They are common benign tumours of the skin, generally not life-threatening and can be completely removed in most cases.

Dermatofibroma

A common benign (non-cancerous) skin tumor, typically occurring on the limbs. It presents as a firm, small papule ranging from brown to reddish-brown in color, usually with a diameter of less than 2 cm.

Neurofibroma

A common benign tumor originating from the nerve sheath, typically growing in the skin or peripheral nerves.

Angioma

A benign tumor formed by the proliferation of vascular endothelial cells or the dilation of blood vessels, most commonly seen in infants (strawberry hemangioma) or in the liver.

Common skin cancers (basal cell, squamous cell, melanocyte)

Malignant tumours on the skin, most found on the face, neck and arms where they are most exposed to sunlight, are among the commonest cancers in Hong Kong.

Rare skin cancers (Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, Merkel cell carcinoma)

Dermatofibrosarcoma Protuberans (DFSP) grows slowly but has a high tendency for local recurrence; Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma (MFH), now more commonly referred to as Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma (UPS), is highly invasive; Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) is an extremely malignant and rapidly progressing neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Keloid scar

It comes from the overgrowth of scar tissue, leading to the one that becomes thick, lumpy, raised and larger than the original wound. Although keloids are not harmful to your health, they may create cosmetic concerns.

Congenital Defects

Cleft lip and palate

Cleft lip and cleft palate are common birth defects that occur when a baby’s lip or mouth do not form properly during pregnancy.

Microtia

It is a congenital deformity of the outer ear where the ear does not fully develop during the first few weeks of pregnancy. Microtia describes the smaller outer ear with the absence of the ear canal.

Though plastic surgery is becoming more common, there are risks associated with different procedures and treatments. Patients should choose a plastic surgeon who is legally registered in Hong Kong, have adequate communication with the surgeon before undergoing plastic surgery, including health conditions and expected results, and be sure to understand the risks involved.

There are different recovery periods for different plastic surgery procedures and treatments. To ensure that the desired outcome is achieved, you should take medication, rest and avoid certain types of diet and activities, including alcoholic, spicy and blood-boosting foods, outdoor activities and stressful work, and attend follow-up appointments, as directed by your doctor after surgery/treatment.

Under the Medical Device Administrative Control System (MDACS) managed by the Department of Health, dermal fillers are classified as Class IV (i.e. high risk) medical devices belonging to the group of “tissue reconstructive materials” All listed medical devices must conform to the requirements of MDACS on safety, performance, and quality. To ensure the safety of our customers and treatments, we use approved materials that are legally registered in Hong Kong only.
