Neurosurgery
Neurosurgery specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions involving the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves and dysfunctions, using endoscopy, minimally-invasive procedures or conventional surgical procedures, depending on the patient’s condition. With two specialist clinics located in Central and Mong Kok, Specialists Central provides consultation, risk assessment, investigations, diagnosis, surgery and treatment services for patients with neurosurgical issues. Neurosurgery Disorders
Spinal Disorders
Herniated Disc
Such a condition is resulted from the degeneration of the cartilage in the spine due to prolonged pressure and poor posture. The slipped disc presses on the surrounding nerves, causing discomfort such as back and neck pain and numbness in the limbs.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine, resulting in an “S” or “C” shaped deformity, usually involving twisting of the thoracic or lumbar spine. It is common during adolescent growth spurts, with females being at a higher risk of developing severe curvature. Most cases are idiopathic (of unknown cause).
Syringomyelia
A chronic progressive spinal cord disorder characterized by the formation of a fluid-filled cavity (syrinx) within the spinal cord, which compresses surrounding neural tissues. This leads to loss of pain and temperature sensation in the upper limbs, muscle weakness, atrophy, stiffness, and potentially bowel/bladder incontinence or paraplegia.
Spinal Compression Fracture
In people with severe osteoporosis (weak, brittle bones), a compression fracture may be caused by simple external force, such as an accidental fall.
Slipped Disc
The cartilaginous core between two vertebrae protrudes, compressing nerves and causing pain, numbness, or weakness.
Spondylolisthesis
It occurs when one of the vertebrae, the bones of your spine, slips out of place onto the vertebra below it. It may put pressure on a nerve, which could weakness and pain in the legs.
Spinal Schwannoma
Tumors that abnormally grow within the spinal cord and its surrounding areas (including intradural, extradural, and bone).
Neurological Disorders
Stroke
Strokes are classified as either ischemic or haemorrhagic. Stroke occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain becomes blocked or bursts, resulting in the death of the brain cells and tissues and impairment of physical activities.
Pituitary Tumours
Most are benign and slow-growing, accounting for about 10-15% of all brain tumors. They are classified into “functional” tumors, which secrete excessive hormones, and “non-functional” tumors, which compress surrounding tissues.
Hydrocephalus
Characterized by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the brain’s ventricles due to overproduction, impaired absorption, or obstructed circulation, leading to increased intracranial pressure and compression of brain tissue.
Facial Paralysis
It is an acute onset of facial nerve palsy in which half of the face droops, making it difficult to make facial expressions.
Spasticity
A sudden, involuntary, and forceful contraction of muscles, often accompanied by stiffness and pain, commonly known as a cramp.
Head Injury
Blunt force or penetrating impact to the scalp, skull, or brain, ranging from minor scalp swelling and concussions to severe intracranial hemorrhage and coma.
Trigeminal Neuralgia
It is a common nerve pain that is characterised by episodes of severe pain on one side of the face, often accompanied by twitching of the facial muscles on the affected side.
Angioma
A benign tumor formed by the proliferation of vascular endothelial cells or the dilation of blood vessels, most commonly seen in infants (strawberry hemangioma) or the liver.

FAQ – Neurosurgery
Facial paralysis is not the same as a stroke. There are many causes of the condition and different affected areas. In addition to stroke, Bell’s palsy can also cause facial paralysis. The dysfunction of the facial nerve results in the inability to control one side of the face. The patient may have trouble closing one eye or speaking. Drooping of the mouth corner may happen as well.
Besides facial paralysis, stroke is commonly associated with other symptoms, such as dizziness, headache, hemiplegia and paralysis. In case of doubt, please seek further medical attention.
Spinal fusion is the most common type of spinal surgery. During the procedure, the neurosurgeon removes the disc and fuses the adjacent vertebrae to eliminate painful movement of the bones and joints.
Some people recover well from brain surgery, but this may take some time; others may experience some problems or long-term difficulties. The problem you may have depends on the brain region where the tumour is located (or the tumour still exists if you have only partially removed it)
Specialist consultation at Specialists Central does not require a referral from a general practitioner. You can call our clinic directly and make an appointment for a neurosurgical consultation.
An appointment is required for our specialist services. You are advised to Contact Us to make an appointment. We will schedule medical consultation for a doctor to understand your condition before arranging appropriate exams and treatment.
Medical fees are determined based on the severity of the patient’s condition, his/her health status, the complexity of the treatment or surgery received, and the postoperative care services.
Health care vouchers can cover some of the costs. Please feel free to contact us for further information.
The medical policy and coverage of each patient vary. Please check with your insurer for the claims process, costs and other details before receiving our specialist outpatient services.
